Referral Guidelines

We are happy to receive referrals for any of the procedures listed in the section below. Since the 1st April 2011, the Surgical Centre accepts most of its referrals via Cornwall's Referral Management Service. This service is centrally run in Truro by Kernow Health and ensures that patients receive a wide range of choice when booking their initial out-patient appointment.

Transport

As all our surgery is performed as a day-case using local anaesthesia, it is essential that patients have transport to and from the centres.

Local Anaesthetic Suitability

Patients need to be generally fit enough to undergo the proposed procedure under local anaesthetic.

heart_and_cardiogramChronic Illness

Most patients with chronic stable medical conditions will be acceptable.

Warfarin

Patients on warfarin are also accepted as long as there is no barrier to stopping their anticoagulation therapy for a few days pre-operatively, although this is not always required.

Under 18s

We are unable to take referrals for children under 18 years of age.

Mental Health and Learning Disability

We will assess all patients with physical, emotional mental health history and/or learning disabilities.

Allergies

Previous severe allergy to local anaesthetic agents would be a contra-indication and therefore we are unable to take referrals for those patients.

Health and Safety

We are unable to accept patients whose overall weight is over 26 Stone (165 kg) due to the restrictions on our operating couch.

Disabilities/Access

Please contact us regarding any special needs that you as a patient may have so that we may make necessary preparation to meet your needs. Probus Surgical Centre is wheelchair friendly.

Referring GPs

Please include in your referral letter any special needs that your patient may require eg their preferred first language / a wheelchair user / visual impairment / hearing impairment / cultural/religious beliefs / use of advocacy services.
